Experiencing sensitive teeth after pregnancy is not something unique to a few women. In fact, most lactating mums normally complain about teeth sensitivity. Note that the association between dental complications and the postnatal period is not a foreign concept. Teeth sensitivity is normally caused by exposed roots or worn out enamel. This could be as a result of chipped or cracked teeth, gum disease, or cavities. If you’re experiencing teeth sensitivity or other dental problems, consult your dentist.
Causes of Sensitive Teeth after Pregnancy
During and even after pregnancy, a woman’s body usually undergoes serious changes. This also has a massive impact on her oral health. Generally, teeth sensitivity after pregnancy can be caused by the following factors:
Diet changes: after the baby is born, a woman’s diet may significantly change. They may end up consuming more sugar because of the exhaustion that comes with handling a newborn. Note that feeding on sugary food, especially snacks at night may increase the risk of dental sensitivity.
High Hormone Levels: changes in hormones, especially high levels of hormones in the body normally exacerbate how the body naturally responds to inflammation caused by bacteria.
Poor oral hygiene: most new moms tend to have fewer hours for themselves. Instead of brushing twice and flossing once daily, they may only do it once or sometimes neglect themselves completely. The effect of this is gum disease or tooth decay which may expose the roots or the enamel.
Managing Sensitive Teeth after Pregnancy
Teeth sensitivity can make it hard to brush, eat, or drink. To manage it:
- Make time for yourself and practice proper oral care.
- Use medications such as topical antiseptics.
- Seek the advice of a dentist. They will recommend treatment options such as filing or application of desensitizing agents. In some instances, the dentist may perform a dental implant.
The postnatal period can be overwhelming to a lot of women. However, don’t forget to watch your diet and practice self-care. Your oral health is important hence you must take time to brush your teeth and floss to minimize the chances of teeth sensitivity.
